Walmart Express with Lisa Gilroy

Director

Here’s how to make a great campaign: 1. Book Lisa Gilroy 2. Put her on the streets of Austin 3. Let her go.

I pushed to shoot real people on the street. I thought their reactions would be better. But what if they were duds or insane? As backup, I cast real people to toss in. I didn’t tell anyone what they were doing, just gave them to Lisa. The result? Lisa got brothers to make up a rap and do push ups. Kids told their parent’s darkest secrets. A woman confessed to gaslighting her situationship. Is it in the spots? No. But did it create a vibe that carries into the spots? I think so.

BONUS CONTENT

Walmart wasn’t sure if real people would make effective ads. I wasn’t either. So my DP Jordan Parrott and I hit Washington Square Park and asked strangers questions. Man on the Street gives me massive amounts of anxiety, but why? People are fun and so are these spots. I put the videos in my pitch and I won the work. The rest is history.
